2.5 head-gaskets & other things

Hi All.
Yes, I'm still looking to get started on my camper/subaru conversion. But just want to clear things up once & for all about 2.5 headgaskets.

DOHC engines........How common are head problems. Do they all go?Have people heard of them doing 200,000 miles with no issues? If one has a new type replacement headgasket fitted is the problem then solved or can it re-occur?

SOHC engines........Are they a big improvement over the earlier ones? Do they have more low down torque? Do they have more difficult/complicated wiring looms?

If you had a DOHC & SOHC for the same price which would you have?

Thanks B'fink.
Nearly bought a 97K 2.5 DOHC yesterday but after a good chat with RJES he said that nearly all blow head-gaskets before they reach 100K & its quite a big strip down on the DOHC's.
So no. I'm definately waiting for a full history, SOHC 2.5 n/a engine or a DOHC that has had replacement gaskets by Subaru main dealer.
Oh & whole car also, so I can drive & check everything & then scrap.
Less than £1000. Not in major hurry as there a month or 2 wait on the bell-housings. But if anyone see's one, give us a heads up.

A generation 3 Outback or GX would be the car to search for (1999-03)

My daily is a 99 Outback with the 2.5 sohc engine and it goes like stink in a 2.2ton auto

I stripped an identical car last year in the local scrappy for the engine and loom to go in the bug, I can't wait to feel how it goes in a car less than half the weight and with type 2 gearing Laugh Out Loud

Keep an eye on the 'uk legacy forums', there are always cars for sale on there

I was told only the Legacy had the 2.5 engine. Will have to widen my ebay search.

I bought a '99 2.5 DOHC Legacy for £700 aware of the issue. The car had full history and only 53K miles running fautlessly. However whilst the engine was out, I got the belts and head gaskets replaced as a precaution and easily done on a bench. This cost only a few hundred for parts and labour at a well respected restoration garage in the South west. This has then removed all the inherent problems with this engine. I looked for ages for the later SOHC but they were much more expensive and rarer.

Yeah, I'm finding that, I've got alittle time waiting for bell-housing & two kitchens to fit & finish but I'd like to know things were in the pipeline. Thinking I should of gone for that other DOHC but then it was way up't north.
