Water pump...N/A to WRX...straight swop...?

Hi All,
Thinking of slapping a WRX header on my N/A EJ20, but it will foul the pump outlet as it exits under the pump. The WRX and seemingly all turbo pumps exit out the front giving the clearance required, but have extra inlets for turbo and oil cooler returns. Is it possible to swop my bottom exit pump for one of these front exit ones and just blank the 2 spare inlets off? I presume that all the housing is still the same size and fitting?

You can simply change the pump outlet for the WRX version

Much easier then swapping pumps plus alot cheaper Wink

me confused....
the n/a has a housing that bolts under the pump...
the wrx one bolts to the front...
are you saying that the wrx housing is smaller or summat?

I was under the impression you can swap for the WRX pump outlet and change the direction of the N/A pump outlet.

I think what I'm suggesting isn't really relevent for your application of the WRX exhaust header.

I've read of people doing the outlet swap to change the outlet direction of the water pump. seems this would be no good for you as your suggesting the WRX pump has a lower profile then the NA pump and outlet combined.

your NA pump and outlet hangs to low to allow you to install the WRX header right?

I would guess that the Turbo's pump would be interchangable with the NA's pump and as you suggested would work. However without having the two pumps together its difficult to say.

Ahhh, I see what you were meaning now.
Yes the na outlet hangs too low...might bite the bullet and get a wrx one to see...or might change my mind on the set up of the exhaust...again!!

I am running a 2.5n/a and have fitted a WRX header with no issues. Not sure what the issue is as surely the cases will be the same. I believe the pumps are interchangable and it is in fact the thermostat housing that differs. If yours points down can you simply change it for one that exits to the right. See the link to whats fitted on mine with a WRX header.

Hi, this is what an EJ20 motor looks like with WRX Header & Waterpump - it does have extra outlets for oil cooler etc but you can get one without the oil cooler outlet if req'd

Some, but not all DOHC EJ25's have a turbo style water pump (with the thermostat cover screws horizontal. It's not the same pump though, as the turbo pump has an extra 16mm pipe fitting.
If you fit a turbo pump to an n/a engine you'd have to block this extra fitting off. Alternatively use the 'turbo style' EJ25 pump. Either way you'd also need the thermostat cover from a turbo or the EJ25 with the 'turbo style' pump. The shape where the cover bolts to the pump is identical in all the EJ and EZ series engines, but the direction the pipe sticks out in is not.
