anyone done a rear engine mount?

I'm kinda back at my project, 2.0T EJ20 in a bug with 915 trans and DS tuning adapter kit. I have the original Subaru engine mounts adapted to the stock late bug rear gearbox mounts, at the ends of the framehorns and the gearbox is mounted at the nose only and on a Porsche style cross-bar with two rubber mounts. Other than that, ther's nothing else supporting the rear end of the engine.

I never got to see the engine in the Impreza it came from, did they have a rear (front in the Impreza obviously) mount? It's not like the engine is hanging off the gearbox like a bug engine, it's on its own mounts, just I feel like it might benefit from a rear mount. Any thoughts?

in the subie they only had the mounts on the flywheel side of the engine & bolted to the subie trans, it is strange at first yes but thats all they had, why change it?

I made a top mount using a section from a Bay window bell housing mount.

thanks guys, if just the two engine mounts and then bolted to the gearbox were good enough for Subaru then they're good enough for me!! Happy

In my IRS type 3 I havent the luxury of frame horns so I had to make a cradle to fit between the engine and the chassis. I only went off the lower two Subaru mounts and I've used the 915 front mount too but I rotated it to get a bit more height.

Hi

One of the reasons that I made a top mount is so that when the motor is removed the trans doesn't flop around, plus I feel every bit helps.

yeah, that's a down side alright, it makes it difficult to fit everything up. I see in the mpic below that the subaru transmission has a mount at the top of the bellhousing too...

I'm pretty sure that that gearbox mount is doing what Steve has suggested. It holds the gearbox up and stops it flopping down when the engine is out. I remember the gearbox moving side to side when I was unaware of the stupid Subaru clutch fork dilemma and I was ramming all sorts of wedges between the gearbox and the engine. but that mount definetly was helping steady it and keeping it up. However I'm sure Subaru put it there for a better purpose then that Grin
