you got a tdi t4 velle yet? not cheap to run compared to a bay after i sold my tdi bay i bought one and it only does 30mpg driving steady round town and bits arnt cheap neither :-( when i first got it did cambelts, water pump (runs off cambelt and known for failling) and swapped coolant cost £200 trade for bits! if your planing on working on it yourself i personally think the 1.9td abl engine is better might be a bit slower but no electronics to cause problems and you can run round the engine there is so much room in the engine bay plus most engine bits like belts, alternators, gaskets glow plugs etc are same as golfs so are easier and cheper to get hold of only thing better about the 5clylinder tdi is that growl when you give it some loud pedal Grin

still looking for one at the moe, my galaxy uses the vw 1.9 and its a great engine(110ps) but the good thing with the older vw 2.4 is the cooking fat(apparently?) without adjustment. galaxy going too, just want one car that can double as daily and be holiday transport etc.

i had a 2.4 5 cylinder t4 and it was a good van - gearbox went on mine apparently a common problem?! so give it a good long test drive and watch out for jumping out of gear under load.

IF you planning on running 100% chipfat then make sure you go twin tank set up as per me and JP as otherwise youll never start in the winter. I know the bloke in the pub always says you dont need to do this but mixing never really works out that economical esp this time of year! but i guess it also depends on your mileage and how you drive (short/long journeys).

IM coming up for 50000 miles on veg oil in my merc vito (another van well worth considering as much cheaper than t4....I bought a low mile vito caravelle equivalent for t4 panel high mileage van money)

all the best with the search and thanks for your input to VWKD.

cheers Rich, we did consider the vito/v class route, i have never been one to buy a car for investment purposes but i cant see,for instance, a 95 velle now losing any money if its tastefully messed with. the vito has the interior to go for though, leather and picnic tables eh!! cheers, mike.

the 2.4 is probably better with chipfat being indirectly injection and mechanical pump, but running twin tanks a 2.5tdi should be ok. Going from a 110 hp galaxy to a guttless 2.4straight diesel think you will be disapointed my mate had a 2.4d panel van up until a few months since and you could beat it on a push bike Grin. I would say if your looking to keep it a while and drive it daily the 2.5tdi caravelle is easist to live with, will resell easy and hold it's value best. i love driving mine been driving it daily for last month or so while my golf gti's been off road and its ace just wants a little bit more power think a remap and injectors could be on the cards in the future to get power up to the german spec 150 bhp multivan

try to find a 96 on as there were lots of changes in 1996 the "long nose" and the 2.5tdi both came out both of which are going to make the resale value better as the long nose looks alot more modern and the 2.5 is the most powerful motor plus you get rear disk brakes etc

the 2.5 velles seem a bit over budget tbh for us at the moe,(want to spend maximum of £3k really). hoping to look at a long nose once the snow stops, it must be one of the last 2.4s perhaps? on a p plate 97.

your not wrong about the price of the 2.5's. ive just payed 3 times the price of my current sharon for a t4 the same age Eeeek

i work at a hotel so the hoarding of chip fat begins now. i want to build a filtering storage device and then start looking into refining it. a friend of mine has been reading up on how to refine it on the web. apparently you clean it with caustic soda crystals.
