I'm collecting an ej20 engine and loom tomorrow but after reading threads about vss I'm starting to worry Ill struggle with the conversion because of the wiring.
If this thread could be used to help others completely understand the vss and how it works and how to overcome any problems it would be good.
The engine is out of a 2001 and is non turbo..
I'm putting it into a 73 bay
do I need anything else from scooby for the vss? Any help would be hugely appreciated as I've searched on here but nothing really useful cropped up |

If you need a VSS but ain't got one:
1/ Stalling from a cruise to a stop
2/ "limp home" achieved whilst cruising - constant throttle opening, no gear change fro approx 4-5 mins
My 98 used to do #2, scary moments indeed on a cruise to Devon
VSS tells the ECU that the vehicle's moving & not reving in neutral. It also tells the PCV to open on a throttle down.

Purge Control Valve (PCV)- the little "match box" sized "thingy"  under the LHS of the inlet manifold.
It's connected to the charcoal canister (connected to a tank breather) and the T/B. Electrically connected to the ECU
On the over-run (& at speed, hence VSS), it opens, thus allowing the T/B to suck out the gasses from the charcoal canister
Some states (US & Aus as far as I know) need this as a reg requirement for emissions. In the UK, we don't give a feck
What ever you do, do not connect it directly to the tank!

Just abit of lingo confusion, I thought the same thing.
PCV usually means Positive crankcase ventilation so you can understand the confusion.
I've never checked to confirm but I think thats known as the purge control solenoid rather than valve.
On some later engines the VSS also dictates radiator fan speed as well.
