Hey all,
Have been thinking alot about my gearbox recently, its a stock CU (I think) bay window gearbox. I found out earlier this year that its properly f**ked, it filled up with water during the 2007 floods and is now seized solid.
My options for replacing it are:
standard bay (cheap but with crap ratios for a golf GTI engine)
091 2L bay gearbox (really good but have you seen the price they go for on ebay? )
or my favourite so far, a standard bay but with a different ring and pinion.
I like the idea of replacing the ring and pinion as its probably cheaper and theres a large range to choose from (see bears motorsport in Birmingham) the only problem is, how do you strip the box down? It seems you need a special tool to remove the diff bearing caps (available from bears but they dont tell you how much it is on the website! what does that tell you?!) Does anyone have this tool that maybe I could borrow?
The other thing I thought of, beetles have a good range of gearboxs, some with a final drive ratio of 3.875:1! Is it possible to use the ring and pinion from a beetle box in a camper box?
Cheers, Rich. _________________ It WILL be ready for the summer, just like it was going to be ready for last summer. And the one before that... |
