I was thinking the other day about alternative gear boxs and it got me thinking about other rear engined cars and the possibility of using there gear box's and linkage and then i thought why not just use the whole rear ends if good enough?
Searching on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rear-engine_design I found these cars to be rear engined.
BMW 600 and 700
Chevrolet Corvair
De Lorean DMC-12
Dune buggies such as the Meyers Manx
FIAT 500, 600, 850, 126 and 133
Hillman Imp
NSU Prinz
Porsche 356, 911 and 959

There are some obvious ones i.e porsche but the one I liked was the Skoda 136 rapid! Its rear engined, good trailing arm suspension with struts, the gear box is a 5 speed and apparently had driving caricteristics like a porsche! I think they made these up until 1990 so I was also wondering if the gear box bell house would be the same as VW?
It all looks like it might fit under a van too! Apparantly the parts are quite rair but I was wondering if any one else had found or though of any other doner cars that would lend them selves to a van/beetle conversion?

I've had said gearbox in my position for some time, never did anything with it though. It did come attached to a Alfa sud engine. From memory I would say that the bellhousing wouldnt't fit a VW but seeing as it was attached to an Alfa lump its not to say it couldn't be mated to any other motor.
Compared to a type one box the Skoda box is much longer, probably the same length as my 915 box. It had a similiar shifter selector rod style as as the type one/915. Has a nice looking built in slave cylinder for the clutch and Although I never had them I would of guessed it would accept VW/Porsche/Skoda 100mm CV's. but then I know nothing of the specifications/ gear ratio's of power handling capabilities of one of these.
But then there is nothing stopping me from driving my mates skoda/spyder replica and seeing how that drives

| ive seen a few with fiat twin cam motors, so they seem to be able to take some amount of power. |

the standard skoda motor was all alloy and very tunable but abit prone to overheating but a subaru turbo motor in it sould sort that out

| there was a skoda rapide a few years ago up for sale which had a subaru motor - i think they opted for the beetle box though as it was stronger than the skoda one if i rememebr correctly. Would be a cool project for sure. |
