It doesn't affect the aluminium as sand does, and there's no sand left that can damage the engine. Simple and darn smart. The Ducati head is from a forum where a guy cleaned all engine parts this way, it looks better than new.

I bought the Aldi spot blasting gun just for this purpose, but the one you posted up looks very simple to make.

You are correct, as a paste or solution it should not be used on aluminium but it is used for dry blasting extensively in industry.

Well, I use both soluted baking soda and citric acid to clean aluminium. As long as you keep an eye on it an rinse it throughly afterwards it's no problem. Acid is always used before anodizing so it's not a secret.

I can really recommend the soda blasting. Super nice finish with simple tools.
