Radiator cap....do I need one?

Hi all,
nearly there now, the subaru engines in, wired and running (thanks to some Elusive help) Radiator and associated pipework fitted, header tank has just gone in (fitted in the rear half of the spare wheel well) and its just occured to me....do I really need a filler/radiator cap in line? does the cap act as a pressure release to vent excess pressure into the header tank or can I do away with it now??

Yes, you need one.
They generally 'blow' at 16ish psi. It's to allow for vapour expansion and to stop the pressure bursting your hoses/rad/block (delete as applicable)

Presuming you did a similar set up to ES's cooling system, your flow thru header tank should have one built in. Mine has and its from a Rover 200/25.
