Right if it's a manual, remove the RHS cam cover, looking into the engine bay from the rear (assuming a single cam) note: there's an arrow on this 5 spoke cam pulley.
Arrow pointing at:
12 o'clock - # 1 @ TDC
3 o'clock - #3 @ TDC
6 o'clock #2 @ TDC
9 o'clock #4 @ TDC
(Subaru Cylinder notations not VW)
Can't remember plug gaps ATM
