pretty sure the vR6 engine is transverse in golfs and t4s anyway. As is the 20v turbo. Both pretty tuneable engines but the 20v Turbo has more potential for less £ - VR6 get pretty expensive to tune into big numbers....

Personally i prefer the 20v Turbo.....but im sure thre are others that prefer the VR!

rich
yes I think the V6 is transverse in the golf but it is always bolted up to the 4 motion box so would take up more space. Thesr are so many good engines in te 150 to 200hp camp straight out of the box it is difficult to decide which is the best power per £ spent and if it is better to fit transverse or longitudinal if you have to buy a 091 box and have it modified to a long 4th gear. I can't find much info in transverse egnines into bays but there must be lots about at shows. Or am I wrong? you could buy a transverse engin and box with low milage for say £600 even with bespoke drive shafts at £400 the pair. A grand is a cheap engine conversion ( a Scubi must cost £2K if you mod the box) or do you know better?

theres a few photos of a transveres pd tdi in a bay on here a guy called penfold of vzi i belive the motor doesnt encroach in to the van to much. i would go with the 20vt engine vr6 engines are heavy, crap on fuel, expensive to tune ,dont do high mileages as well as the 4 cylinders

i agree that on paper the transverse option is very attractive and something I would consider if i was starting again however at the moment your only considering £ and there is a hell of a lot/read massive amount of work in making a transverse work compared to the relative ease of bolting up to a 091 box and fabricating an engine support bar. so dont underestimate the huge amount of fabrication involved.

regarding other transverses - I only know of the TDI golf one so i wouldnt expect it to be anywhere near as well documented as more conventional options on the web.

i agree with rich theres a whole lot of work to put in a transverse engine and box in! plus a lot of fab work and if you ever want to put it back to stock you will have cut alot of van away. saying that a bulit 091 is going to cost you! £250+ for a box to rebuild plus £1000 to have regeared and rebuilt that sort of money would buy a engine, box, loom ecu and you would still have about £750 in back burner for rest of conversion!

hi. I agree the transverse option would lead to more fabrication but worth it in the end . I have had a look a Penfolds build link but I am still confused as to how the engine clears the rear trailing links or are these removed to run struts. do you have to remove the trailing arm support bar as well (or what ever it is called). Has anyone seen any pictures taken from underneath to show this area?

Just thought i'd ping a post up in case anyone is considering doing a 1.8T conversion..

We are half way through the conversion now using an Omex ECU and as a previous post indicated we are looking at 200bph without much more than a good mapping.. If anyone want any tips we have quite a few..

Also as you will converting to a hydrolic clutch our fabricator now has a template for the bracket you will need..

Happy converting!!

Any updates on this vwmellow?

Or anybody else put a 1.8t in to an early bay / splitscreen?

Very interested in this conversion, especially as the price of these engines seems to have dropped recently.
