I think the F/I Rabbit engine would be a much nicer drive than a dirty derv in a bug. I have a friend with a 1.8 Rabbit engine in his bus and that drives really nicely so I'd imagine it would be quite fun in a bug.
Look forward to seeing the pics _________________ 1971 Devon Bay with 1800 Ford Turbo Diesel Engine (wip)

Hi Peter
Is yours a bug or bus?
I've got a 2e 2.0 8 valve gti in my bay and its great, the 16 valve would be good but the dizzy is in an awkward place. If you go for a later engine wiring is more complex. I can send you all the pin out/ wiring stuff if you go for a 2e
I use a kennedy adaptor and put a t25 diesel spigot bearing in the crankshaft. Engine bracket, fuel lines, exhaust etc etc need to be fabbed
Hardest bit of a tdi is the gearing as deisels (espesially tdi's rev really low to get such good mpg)
Soooo much better than an lawn mower engine though

sorry to hyjack this post a bit but beetleseb you say you have a 8v gti engine in your bay and that is what im planning to do this summer. You mention using kennedy kit which again is my prefered option but you also mention using a t25 diesel spigot bearing on the crankshaft. Is this part of the kit? is it requried? i dont have that bit on my shopping list, so should i add it? what is its purpose?
lots of questions...

Hi
Firstly where abouts are you? If your near cheltenham then come over for a morning or afternoon, take a look, drink tea and I'll take you for a spin. Its not a hard conversion but actually seeing it done will really help.
The spigot bearing is a simple bit of kit, it stops the input shaft wobbling about. £2 from GSF. There is one on a standard vw flywheel nut, you may just not have noticed it.
Which engine are you doing, the petrol 2e? I have most of the wiring diagrams for the non imobaliser engines now.

im in faversham, kent... so a bit of a trek... not impossible mind... I have a mk1 golf gti 1.8l 8v KJET rebored to 2.1l with fast road cams, ported and polished head etc etc etc... my old golf is donating its heart for the project
it goes engine side then or gearbox? i guess i should get one for the sake of 2quid... just pushes on i take it...
Wiring should be straight forward being a kjet but if you have something for it then bril... i havent even thought about the wiring yet... |

Yes kents a fair old way....
The bearing goes into the flywheel, the holes all there simple!
Funny but I've never played with K jet, easy enough I'm told
I like the kennedy plate and flywheel, I was not happy with the nuts and bolts though and put them straight in the bin
For the flywheel you need fine pitch bolts which are a pain to find. They also need to be high tourque. The original ones aren't long enough but you can use na subaru bolts, avalible from RJES - over there -->
Other than that, fab a brace and an exhaust, make a new throttle cable and then plumb it all in.
