Does this look right?? Cooling issue

This is basically how my cooling system looks, the pipe to the thermostat from the rad isn't getting hot, do you think it's just a sticking stat?

Have a read through this, may help you out, your setup looks right according to RJES diagram.

How long are you waiting for it to warm up?
Is the heater pipes warming up?
Is the engine getting too hot?
Is the rad tilting up and air locking?

It will take a while before the stat opens to allow flow to the rad.

Probably silly questions that you've already thought of.

It seems I've got a blockage somewhere in the rad, the side it flows out of doesn't get anywhere near as hot as the in side.

Clearly there is an airlock. Unless your water pump or temperature stat is buggared. The coolant circuit is almost identical to mine.

I know my mate had loads of trouble bleeding a bay with ej20 turbo. He back it up a pile of dirt raising the back end and left it running. It'll take 20-30 minutes to warm up on idle before the stat will open.

Also we're assuming that you heater matrix is open and free of air. Mine always worked well and was self bleeding until I decided to install a heater. I ended up having to install a small bleeder pipe and T'd that into the black line on your diagram.

cheers dude I'm relatively new to this and its doing my head in.

i know the stat is working as I've had it out and checked.

if the water pump was knackered would i still see water flowing in the expansion tank? it seems to be mainly from the black pipe in the diagram?

If the black pipe is flowing coolant then I'd say you have an airlock in the radiator pipe between the black pipe and the stat.

Try back flowing it with hose pipe on the radiator return pipe perhaps. Or more the connection for the black pipe closer to the stat.

I think it may be sorted, my dad put a brass bleed valve at the front of the rad,

jacked back up and ran it for half hour or so.

jacked front up and bled it through new valve.


all seems to be OK and you can feel the pressure difference in the pipes from before when they were rock solid


.... for now it seems fine.
