Well I've only gone and bought myself a donor, its gonna be my winter hack until the tax runs out in the spring when it will have its heart ripped out.
Its a 2001 2 ltr n/a SOHC 65k miles 1 owner FSH.
With it being a later model I will need to reverse the inlet manifold according to what I've read.
So at least the ball is rolling

Looks very tidy that and nice mileage.. will be a shame to hack it apart but not that much of a shame considering the cause

15inch Im afraid.
I see your sig, fitting a 2.5ltr does it fit in the engine bay ok?
Whats the width of it? |

Yes it fits, its the sohc.

You don't have to, people do it but there's many ways around it.
I didnt reverse either the water or inlet manifolds on mine.
The SOHC EJ25s still need abit of body trimming in a bug, the sides of the engine bay are abit to narrow as is, EJ22 is the biggest you can squeeze in between the engine bay seals of abug

I dint know that, I read its was something to do with the internal passages of the valve or something, I guess I will have a proper look when the engine comes out. I would prefere to keep the manifold in the std orientation and use the reverser.

Theres Pros and Cons for eitherway
Leaving the manifold in stock orientation the only downside is you have to make or buy the throttle body inverter, everything else can be left alone
Fliping it around introduces a whole other range of work
new alternator brackets need fabbing up, hoses and wiring need extending, pipework that doenst hit the decklid for the throttle body etc...
Flipping the water manifold isnt a bad idea though, sometimes wish Id done it but it needs to be cut, rotated and alu welded back together to clear the bell housing which was why I skipped it
The EJ25 SOHC interfere with the bumper mountings in a beetle which is why I dont like them,
A small bump from behind from the teenager texting while driving which would probably do minor damage normally would make for some serious repairs
