|

hi
since getting my bay running under scooby power i now feel it needs more gears at the moment ive got the standard 1.6 box paired to the engine 2.2, ive just purchased a 5 rib 2.0l box and also looking at a 914(901)5 speed box from a porsche,is there much difference between the two regarding ratios , is it worth going through the hassle to convert the 914 or do i just stick to the 5 rib box , how much work would be involved to convert the 914, does the bellhousing detatch from the 914 would i have to change the input shaft and so on
all info would be appreciated thank you |

arnt the internals of the 5rib same as the 002 3 rib box but just in a stronger case?
the 6 rib 091 "cp" is the strongest & highest gear'ed stock bay box i would use one of those i had one in my last bay and 70mph was just over 3500 rpm with 205/45/17 tyres that would be about 130mph on the redline with a scooby motor _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,

| The boxes are almost the same in ratio according to the debates at Shoptalkforums. |

i found all the info i needed on the samba for bus boxes, perhaps look up bug@5speed on germanlook forums for the 914 etc porsche box info,
after weighing up my options i went with the 091 box, (both it & porsche gear arent easy or cheap to find here though) the only thing that it would of been nice to have is a 5th/6th gear BUT the 091 fits with torsion housing uncut _________________ Go fast 1302 brought 2 u by

I'm assuming you've already using an adaptor plate between your VW box and the Subaru motor?
A 901 and VW bus box should fit onto the adptor plate already. I'm not sure about input shafts through. especially not with an existing adaptor plate.
The Porsche 901 gearbox has a dog leg gear pattern for the forward gears. 1st gear is left and back as opposed to a more conventonal H pattern were 1st is left and forward followed by 2nd (left and back). I think reverse will be in front of 1st but I dunno.
