Swapping FWD Eng+Transaxle into VW Bus

Hi,

I'm in the US and just starting to think about a diesel swap. For maximum economy, I'm thinking a small turbo diesel is the way to go.

All of the swaps I have seen involve keeping the VW Transaxle. I would think that transplanting a front wheel drive engine+transaxle might be better than mating up a non-VW engine to the VW Transaxle.

Not only is an adapter plate not needed, but the gearing should also be more suitable.

I'd be curious if anyone has done this?

EDIT: Yes, it's a beetle, but you'll get the idea. Splittyman did a conversion on a split too, equally crazy as the beetle.

the engine would be to far forward and a longer engine compartment would have to be built i would imagine? time for the tape measure

Move the tank and there must be enough space. It sounds like a small problem to me.

the whole engine needs to be if front of the driveshaft if in transverse setup the boot floor/engine bay would need to be moved forward almost to the cargo door line
